Enjoying a 25-plus year career as a stage performer, Dean Anthony was often referred to as “The Tumbling Tenor”; He created over 100 roles and was highly praised as a character artist for his vocal, dramatic, physical and acrobatic abilities. Over the past 12 years, Mr. Anthony has quickly established himself as a dynamic Stage Director, Educator and Producer on the operatic scene with his energetic, gritty and physical style of work. He is the Director of Opera at the Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Center and recently named Artistic & Producing Director of the Asheville Lyric Opera. For the 2018-19 season, Mr. Anthony will be the Interim Opera Director for SUNY Potsdam, Craine School of Music producing Tom Cipullo’s world premiere opera, MAYO.

Mr. Anthony is about to enter his 7th season as Director of Opera with the Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Center. A member of the Faculty at Brevard since 2008, His productions include THE MERRY WIDOW, FALSTAFF, ALBERT HERRING, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, CANDIDE, SWEENEY TODD, THE THREEPENNY OPERA, MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM, BALLAD OF BABY DOE, ELIXIR OF LOVE, SUSANNA, DIE FLEDERMAUS, MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, STREET SCENE, RIGOLETTO, FALLING ANGEL, SUOR ANGELICA, TINTYPES, HMS PINAFORE, a Workshop of Robert Aldridge’s new opera SISTER CARRIE, and the world premiere of the new opera, SPEED DATING TONIGHT!.
From 2009-2012 Mr. Anthony was the Resident Stage Director & Director of Production at Shreveport Opera where he directed DON GIOVANNI, DEAD MAN WALKING, HMS PINAFORE, MAN OF LA MANCHA, LA BOHEME, MANON LESCAUT, I PAGLACCI, THE MERRY WIDOW, TOSCA, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN, AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, and THE FANTASTICKS.
Mr. Anthony conceived, directed and produced the opera SPEED DATING TONIGHT! with Michael Ching’s words and music in the summer of 2013. The opera allows any University or Opera Companies that produces it to use as many artists as one sees fit. With 50 plus unique dating vocal numbers in different keys, it offers enough roles to fit any needs. With over 70 productions so far, it’s off to one of the fastest starts ever for an American opera.
