Janinah BurnettActor, Soprano

Janinah Burnett is an American soprano sought for her timeless and refined vocal quality and her naked emotion. Her signature roles such as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte are “heart-rendingly touching,” says The Sunday Times (London). One of the few singers to perform a leading role in a Broadway production as well as sing on the Metropolitan Opera stage, she is revered as a shimmering soprano with a poetic sense of line and dramatic poignancy.

Ms. Burnett’s first professional operatic engagement in 2002 was joining the cast of Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway production as Mimí with a record of 82 sold-out performances. While with the production, she travelled to San Francisco, New York City, and Los Angeles with the cast. Following the productions end in 2004, Ms. Burnett joined the world premier cast of Marion J. Caffey’s Three Mo’ Divas.
Ms. Burnett joined the Metropolitan Opera roster in 2008 for productions of Carmen and La Bohème, and has since returned for Parsifal, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Enchanted Island and Iphigénie en Tauride with Placido Domingo. Ms. Burnett debuted at the MET as Bianca in La Rondine in January 2013 and will return in 2015 for Manon.

In the 2012/13 season, Ms. Burnett performed the roles of Leila in John Adams’ I was looking at the ceiling and suddenly I saw the sky with Théâtre du Châtelet; Leïla in Les Pêcheurs de Perles with Opera Carolina; a Porgy and Bess concert suite with Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos in Lisbon, Portgual; was a soloist with the Plainfield Symphony, and The American Spiritual Ensemble.
