Kelly McCarthy was born and raised in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. She has been interested in theater and film since she was a young child, always playing “pretend”, loving the video camera and always making home movies with her friends. When she was in her freshman year of high school, she competed in the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) in New York for modeling and acting. Shortly after she started getting involved modeling and commercial work including a commercial for Maybelline cosmetics.
She began to develop an enjoyment and interest in singing in her sophomore year of high school and began studying musical theater at the New Jersey Youth Theater in Roselle Park, NJ, along with studying private vocal lessons with Mason Gross School of the Arts graduate Alejandra Garrido. She began to also study opera at this time and get involved in theater groups outside of her high school. She has performed in multiple showcases with the New Jersey Youth Theater, and community theater groups such as Franklin Theater Work’s production of Sweeney Todd (Johanna), the Pineda Lyric Opera Company’s Elixir of Love (Giannetta), and the Phillipsburg Area Summer Youth Theater’s The Sound of Music (Maria).
In 2013 she was accepted into Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University) as a vocal performance major. She began studying opera and private vocal coaching with opera singer Eduardo Chama. In college, Kelly continued her vocal training and was a soprano in Mason Gross’s production of Falstaff, but also kept busy with her love for musical theater and acting, getting involved in student-run productions on campus. Some of her favorites include Hair the musical (Mary) and Dog Sees God (Tricia), at Rutger’s Cabaret Theater. Other stage credits include performing at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Kiss Me Kate, and with Plays in the Park’s Les Miserables in 2013. She has also performed with interactive theater group ReThink Theatrical in their production of Alice in Wonderland.
In 2015, Kelly returned to her love of television and film acting, starring in a few short films, including one for Columbia University, where she played Ana in “The Virgin”, and one for Drexel University where she played Alice in “I am Her.” In 2016-2017 she was in “BINGE” the web series as a recurring character (Zoey). She has a history of on camera acting training from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University and studios around the New York City area. Kelly is passionate about acting, music and the entertainment industry as a whole and plans to continue her training, learning and growing and developing her skills for the industry.
