Gary Simpson starred as “Hobart Showalter” in academy award winner, STEVEN SODERBERGH’S, ‘THE KNICK’, on CINEMAX. On stage, he performed with Tony and Emmy award winner, as well as American Theater Hall of Fame inductee, PHILIP BOSCO, at the Shakespeare Marathon with the New York Shakespeare Festival where he sang “Falstaff’s aria” from VERDI’S opera of the same name.
He made his MET debut as “PRITSCHITSCH” in THE MERRY WIDOW, under the direction of five-time Tony Award winner, SUSAN STROMAN. This production was seen worldwide in movie theaters and is available on DVD. Gary was just seen in the American Premier of the opera “Matsukaze” in the role of THE MONK at the Spoleto Festival. He also performed THE MONK at the Lincoln Center Festival. Mr. Simpson sang SCARPIA in “Tosca” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, HOLLÄNDER in “Der Fliegende Holländer”, (his fifth production), in Cape Town, South Africa. Gary sang HOLLÄNDER at the BNO- Bucharesti Romania, the Statni Opera- Prague, Czech Republic, the Manaus Opera Festival- Manaus Brazil, as well as with the Hawaii Opera Theater, Honolulu, Hawaii. He sang “Miles Glorious” with TV Star EDDIE MEKKA in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To The Forum” at Theater Zone in Naples Florida.
Gary has sung productions of the title role in SWEENEY TODD and “Miguel de Cervantes” in MAN OF LAMANCHA. He has sung “FALSTAFF” in Hagen, Germany as well as with the International Opera Center in Washington D.C. in Gary has been invited to act and sing in over a dozen countries from Germany, Austria to Sri Lanka and South Africa. He has worked with every major American opera company.
He spent two seasons as a Firefighter for the US Forest Service, Payette Forest, New Meadows District and is a proud graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts.
